Archived Lake Reports for September 2005
North Lake adult only non-members*
22/09 2005
North Lake has now produced a staggering 50 fish over 30lb to 37lb 4oz this year already and continues in fine form. A little thought about your presentation goes a long way, the big fish are not easily fooled. Don’t overlook float fishing on day sessions, Martin Locke (of Solar tackle fame) recently proved this to be an extremely effective and exciting method, his techniques and tips can be seen in Carpology magazine in the near future.
‘Polaris’ type sliding floats are the best way to go. Still plenty of catfish action with Moggies to 51lb banked in the last few days. Loads of 20lb plus carp are being banked daily but you still have to get your gear right, stop looking for miracle baits and concentrate on presentation.
02/09 2005
North Lake has now produced 38 fish over 30lb to 36lb 6oz this year already and looks set to continue in fine form. Still lots of sport coming from all over the lake. A little thought about your presentation goes a long way, the method continues to produce good bags but something a bit different is required to bank the big fish.
The Catfish are really feeding well with 3 fish over 40lb and 2 over 50lb caught in the last 10 days. The biggest cat scaled an impressive 53lb. Big (28mm) pellet or big bunches of lob worms are still top bait for the Moggies.
* Minimum tackle requirements: 40” net, 40” unhooking mat, 2.5lb T.C rods and 10lb line per angler, no sharing allowed. Pre-booking 2–3 weeks in advance for 24 hour plus weekend sessions on North Lake is advisable.
Plantation Lake*
22/09 2005
Maize and corn are still the preferred baits but boilies are putting some good fish on the bank as well. As with North lake, presentation and location of your hook-baits is the key to success on Plantation. These fish are pretty visual and casting to them can pay dividends. Surface fishing with crust or pellet can be effective with the correct conditions.
02/09 2005
You really have to put some thought into your presentation on this lake to have any chance of success. There are still loads of fish coming out in the 12 to 20lb range. Cast to feeding fish and try something unusual it can make all the difference. Maize is still working well. Don’t forget to loose feed free offerings around your chosen hook bait.
* Minimum tackle requirements are a 30” net and an un-hooking mat per angler.
Prairie Lake
22/09 2005
Prairie continues to produce some cracking sport to just about every method going. Lots of different species showing with Andy Little from the Angler’s Mail banking a tremendous 11lb Lake Barbel on a recent visit (see future editions of the Angler’s Mail for details).
Team Korda’s Ali Hamidi and Damien Clarke also paid Prairie a visit to test their companies new maggot clip, the results were pretty impressive with both guys managing loads of doubles and plenty of action despite dreadful conditions, see the October issue of Improve your coarse fishing for full details of this devastating new bit of kit.
02/09 2005
The method is still firm favorite and continues to produce some good bags of fish. Don’t overlook the basics as float fished maggot or worm has also put some nice fish on the bank. Don’t be shy with the ground bait or freebies as Prairie responds well to big beds of bait.
Plenty of surface sport to pellet or crust but lull the fish into a false sense of security with free offerings (4–5 at a time) before introducing your hook bait. Again pay some attention to your presentation, match your hook to the bait you are fishing, it can make all the difference.
Sandwich Lake
22/09 2005
Matches are now in full swing again so it’s always worth a call to check availability for Wednesdays or Sundays. Sandwich is fishing very well at present with excellent bags of Bream, Skimmers, Roach, Rudd and Tench being put together. There are still a few big Carp in Sandwich so don’t nod off or you’ll loose your rod! Best baits are maggot, worm, caster, pellet, paste and corn. Use plenty of ground-bait, little and often to build up your swim. Fish the feeder or float.
02/09 2005
There is some great Tench fishing to be had at the moment with big bags of Green and Golden tinkers a regular occurrence. Still lots of Bream, Chubb, Roach, Rudd and Dace are coming out with natural baits working well as always. Small hooks, light hook link and plenty of ground bait (little and often) will keep interest in your swim. Watch the surface for big Orfe and Rudd.
Matches are now on again so it’s worth phoning before a Wednesday or Sunday trip to check availability.
Kettles Lake
22/09 2005
Kettles is on a run of producing some lovely big Carp at the moment to over 20lb with the best a stunning 24lb common last week. Tactics are the same as for Prairie, concentrate on your presentation and bait location. Basic water craft is key, find the spots and you will find the big fish. Don’t be shy with the bait as these fish will feed hard and empty your swim in no time. Float fished worm has produced some great fish and don’t forget the humble maggot.
02/09 2005
The method is still well worth considering. Bear in mind that to fish the method correctly you need plenty of method mix! We advise between 3–5kg per person, per day minimum! All baits are doing well with corn and maize being particularly good at present. Put some thought into your presentation and it will pay dividends. Surface sport on pellet or crust is excellent in the hotter weather.
Pullens Lake members only
22/09 2005
Pullens is on fine form with just about everyone catching multiple bags. Yet again T.D. has been up to his old tricks producing some fabulous fish to 28lb. Don’t be shy with the freebies, lump the stuff in there and you will reap the benefits.
Most fish are coming from mid water but there have been some big fish showing in the margins. Surface sport keeps on improving with several 20lb plus fish falling to pellet off the top.
02/09 2005
Terry Dobson is at it again with 40 fish banked in a 12 day session, well done Terry. Plenty of action for everyone else as well. Good numbers of fish to mid-twenty on a daily basis.
The truly big fish are really starting to show now and it won’t be long before we have a new lake record. Lots of bait seems to be the way to go at present.
West End Lake members only
22/09 2005
West end keeps on producing and is the same as Pullens, use plenty of bait to get the results. Dynamite Tiger-nut and Halibut Pellet boilies seem to be the current favourites.
02/09 2005
Still consistent even in all this heat! Plenty of multiple fish catches reported.
The carp are responding to lots of bait so pile it in!
